Liberia: House leadership signs MOU with Liberia National Insurance Company

Monrovia – National Insurance Corporation of Liberia (NICOL) management and leaders of the House of Representatives have signed a Memorandum of Understanding; as required by law, for the provision of group life and medical insurance coverage to the staff of the House of Representatives Headquarters.

The official signing ceremony took place on Monday at the headquarters of the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia (NICOL) in Monrovia. Representing the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia, its Managing Director, Hon. Sam Mannah, and representing the leadership of the House of Representatives, was Nimba County District No. 9 Representative, Hon. Johnson Gwaikolo, Chairman of the Rules, Order and Administration Committee, and Representative of Nimba County District No. 3, Hon. Joseph N. Somwarbi, Chairman, Health Committee, House of Representatives.

The signing ceremony between the two institutions is not only in accordance with the law, but also in fulfillment of the promise made by the leadership of the House of Representatives led by Speaker Dr. Bhofal Chambers to the staff members of the central administration of the House of Representatives.

Speaking on behalf of the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia, Hon. Sam Mannah said the resuscitation of the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia (NICOL) by HE President George Manneh Weah is a true representation of President Weah’s commitment to lifting Liberians out of poverty into economic prosperity. He added that when NICOL is fully revitalized, it will contribute immensely to economic growth and national development.

The Managing Director of NICOL further expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the House of Representatives for taking the bold step in accordance with the law establishing the company, which requires the company to carry all assurances from the Government of Liberia , public companies and any business. in which the government is a 50% or more shareholder.

Speaking on behalf of the leadership of the House of Representatives, Hon. Johnson Gwaikolo, Chairman of Rules, Order and Administration, congratulated NICOL’s Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Sam Mannah and his team for using their meager resources to effectively operate the institution to an appreciable status which proves that NICOL is ready to be restored to its pre-war status, and categorically called on all government institutions to follow the example of the House of Representatives by placing all their insurance with the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia in accordance with the law.

“For NICOL to keep its doors open with few resources, we think it is commendable that you have embarked on the rehabilitation and re-engineering of NICOL’s business with very limited resources since this management group has taken over with very little support. We think it is commendable, and the Chamber has recognized this and thought it wise to do everything possible to support the success of this company. So we thank you and congratulations! We have come together here today to sign this insurance document as a result of the will and commitment made to our employees. You know that at the beginning of the 54 Parliament, we thought it was important for all of us in the House to be insured and placed under an umbrella that would provide some coverage and protection in the event of illness or even death.In this effort, we thought that NICOL could offer us this opportunity, why?Because NICOL is one of ‘e Between us, NICOL is ours, so it only makes sense that we wrap our arms around ours and elevate him, empower him to look after us the way and way we want what we loved to do. That’s why we came here to NICOL.” Hon Johnson Gwaikolo.

For his part, the Honorable Joseph N. Somwarbi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee, reiterated the sentiments expressed by his colleague regarding the need for all government institutions to obtain insurance from the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia in accordance to the law.

“NICOL belongs to us and we must all support our own” Hon. Somwarbi.

The memorandum of understanding that was signed between NICOL and the management of the House of Representatives will come into full effect on July 1, 2022 with a clause that can be reviewed annually.
